AMERICAN BECKWITHS

     William Beckwith born at Featherstone Castle Yorkshire England, was baptised there March 29th 1606 and immigrated to Maryland in 1648. He was a merchant and planter at his Mann of land called St Josephs, situated at Port Patience, in the Paturxet River, Calvert County Maryland, inherited by his wife from her father. He with other Protestant gentlemen of Maryland was a signer of a declaration commencing the liberal administration of Lord Baltimore, in illumine the Protestants undersurpted preacher of this religion and as a follower of Lord Baltimore party he participated in the battles of Ann Arundel, and with the Catholic party took refuge in Virginia, where he remained two years, returning to Maryland in 1657. In 1671 he went to England on business and died in the city of London in November 1676. The Virginian Beckwiths have been prominent people in this state, holding many important positions, and intermarying with distinguished families, descendants of Pacohontus, Fitzhughes, Lee Ball and others). William Beckwith, son of Thomas and Frances (Fronst) Beckwith, Immigrated to Virginia with Captain John smith in 1607. He married in 1616 and had a daughter, and one son Henry born about 1619.  

  Elisha Beckwith born at Waterford 1711 moved to the South Western States where he died. His children were 1st Nicholal died at the South, unmarried, 2nd Jacob died at Louisville Kentucky, unmarried, 3rd Calet Raymond Beckwith married Sallie Forsythe of Natesford County, died on the Mississippi River, 4th Nicholas 2nd married Emily Hart of Pillsbury Pennsylvania, died in New Orleans, 5th Athilinda married Arthur Maynard of Waterford, 6th Sarah married Daniel Maynard, lived in St. Louis, 7th Irene married Pareal Tournee of New Orleans, 8th Charlotte married Samuel Rogers of Kentucky, 9th Mary married Hiram Caverty and resided in Glinn’s, 10th Manassat married Jane Lawless and lived in Kentucky, Elisha Beckwith wife was Grace Leach, born 1714.
